Are Compostable and Biodegradable Cups the Same?
Yes and no. In practice, all compostable coffee cups are biodegradable. However, not all biodegradable cups are compostable. That may sound a little confusing, but it all comes down to the specifics.
Compostable coffee cups must meet certain criteria to be labeled as such. For example, they must break down within a certain time period and must not create toxic byproducts during the process. Biodegradable cups are not always subject to these standards. While a cup may be labeled “biodegradable,” it may require distinct temperature conditions to break down properly. Furthermore, it might only break down after an extended and undefined period of time.
Most importantly, while some biodegradable coffee cups may break down safely into harmless biomass, some of these coffee cups might create toxins that contaminate compost. Because compost is nutrient-rich and serves a genuine environmental purpose, some biodegradable cups can, ironically, cause unintended harm to the environment.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take for a compostable cup to decompose?
Within a proper commercial compost facility, compostable cups take no more than a few weeks to completely decompose. Due to the precise temperature and humidity conditions, the decomposition process is more consistent and doesn’t let biomaterials linger for too long.
Can you put compostable products in compost?
Compostable products are meant to be put in compost, but they only break down properly within commercial compost piles. While some communities have begun utilizing their own compost piles, the conditions within them are not sufficient to break down waste efficiently. If you use compostable cups and lids, make sure to use a compost bin and have compostable waste disposed of correctly.
